December activities in Samoëns

December is a month of contrast - from the first 3 week of quiet, then all of a sudden the ski season season is upon us. The village is transformed from agricultural town. there is excitement an a buzz with the first opportunities to hit the piste and the festive season. Ask Megan and Jonny about Catered options, why not enjoy a catered Christmas or New Years dinner at the Lodge. We can also offer baby sitting and many other services - plaese ask.

To avoid the seasonal crowds, get off the beaten track, try a day skiing in Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, this is a small ski area attached to the Grand Massif. From Samoëns either drive the 10km or take the ski bus from the GME. You can also ski there via the 14km Cascades blue run which is accessible from Grandes Platières - at the top of Flaine - this is well worthwhile for the more competent skier, it is generally quiet with exceptionally beautiful views. You can also stop off at the exquisite and rustic Refuge du Lac de Gers, accessed either via the Black (experts only) Ger bowl - which again runs from Grandes Platières - or telephone for a ski-doo tow from a call post part-way down Cascade.

Nearer to home, the pistes at Gron in Les Carroz and the top pistes at Samoëns are usually quiet, and the crowds die down lunchtime. Another top tip is to depart from the Vercland Gondola, which is open 15 minutes earlier than the GME and is usually less crowded.
